In memory of workers killed on job in Turin and throughout Italy

The first duty

Comment by Romano Prodi , from "La Stampa"

Today is the day of pain and posting more difficult. It is the day the last salute to Italy's four sons of work: Angelo Laurino, Bruno Santino, Antonio Schiavone, Roberto Scola. Every word that was not that of a respectful homage would be too much. It's time commitments, such as the adoption of enhanced security measures at the workplace, the suspension of production activities where there are no adequate standards, the demand severe to prompt and fair.

This government has done and continues to do after today. Turin crying - and Turin all over the country - four lives that were not to be broken as well. I can not be in Turin today as I wanted. In fact I'll be in Lisbon for the signing of the Treaty European Union.

But my big hug goes to the memory of them and their loved ones, as well as my thoughts turn to the courageous struggle for the life of Giuseppe De Masi, Rocco Marzo and Rosario Rodino.

die every day in Italy and employees. It is an insult to democracy and the spirit of the Constitution itself. We have a duty to defend the lives of workers, and safeguards to ensure rules, efforts to improve the moral and material conditions of each.

The sacrifice of Angelo Bruno, Robert Anthony and should not be in vain. Die like this, in 2007, is unacceptable. And that is why today is not only the day of pain. But also that the homage and promise job security and workplaces will become the first of our duties.
